29 December 2003 Ken, in the wiki Lehr Stoff? the first occurrence of a graphic can be seen, but not further occurrences of the same graphic. What am I doing wrong? Hartmut Pfüller  Hartmut, You are not doing anything wrong. In fact, you did something right, which was to report this. There was a bug in the way inline images were being parsed in wikis that do not use a WYSIWYG editor. Thanks for pointing this out. Its fixed now.

27 December 2003, Pete for wiki Hvraptors Web?
The maito wikiwidget does not seem to be working. Also, as owner I am not offered a line where I can subscribe to my wiki. On the bright sided, the new editing capabilities are a nice addition, though the editing panel extends to the right a bit far.
You need to be logged in to see the subscribe option. Are you logged in when you cannot see the subscribe line ? You also have to have subscribed to at least a level 1 account. The free account does not have the ability to subscribe. However, the mailto widget should work. I just tested it and it seems to send me notifications of changes. I changed it to send HTML email, so the page is readable when the email arrives.
I have also added the ability to control the height and width of the edit control when you are logged in. Kenneth Tyler 27 Dec 2003
The appearance and control of the window are terrific. Receiving it as formatted HTML email is also good. (An ability to just 'notify' about changes would also be nice.) I placed a second maito widget on the wiki. The first still does not work (send me a test message using that email address?) while the second does work. Pete Dec 29 2003

Error in link, fix? Robert
http://www.WorldRailFans.org/Germany/DictionaryAppendices.shtml#axlelayout
Robert, I have fixed the parsing problem, url's with capitalized words in them should be safe now. I moved this posting to the top of the list because its been a while since your posted it.
Kenneth Tyler
It's not my server as I can not change letters in the link
because of that then works it not.
Robert

Thank you for fixed it! 25 December 2003 by Robert

I think my seedwikis got problems with includes and links wikiwidgets. It hapenned today in http://www.tabadotupi.tk and http://www.compartilhandobaners.tk or seedwikis ids 2330 and 3260. As Olivier Antoni said days before the problem seems to occur only after editing the page, other pages are still rendered correctly. I'm using the Text Area for editing, if that makes any difference. Thanks in advance.

The new code for building tables in the non-activeedit wikis was interferring with your include widgets. I've fixed it now and your page should have returned to normal. Kenneth Tyler 22 Dec 2003

I have seen at different moments that Wiki Links are not rendered as links, but instead are replaced with (part of) the contents of the page to which they refer, mostly along with some formatting code. This effectively renders the links unusable and the page in question pretty much unreadable. After a while, the problem just goes away. The problem seems to occur only after editing the page, other pages are still rendered correctly. I'm using the Text Area for editing, if that makes any difference.
Olivier, thanks for the quick report. I introduced some new parsing rules for the wikis that use text areas yesterday, and one of the rules was a little greedy. It should be fixed now.
I add Wikipedia like Header rules == this is an h1 header == and table rules

cell1cell2
this would become a table with one row and two cells. I'll be adding full documentation to the Seed Wiki Book today.

Reverse Link seems to find only pages that have been altered recently.  Olivier, yes, I changed the way that links are stored and found in order to lighten the processing load on the server. References to the  links on a page are now saved in a seperate table and that is the table that is searched for Reverse Link?. The references in that table are inserted only when a page is saved. If a page doesn't show up it should work to open it in "edit" and then "save" it. That should make the page show up in reverse links. Sorry for the difficulty. I try to make the changes in Seed Wiki as transparent to the users as possible, but I don't always succeed.  Kenneth Tyler 20, Dec 2003 Thanks for your quick response. Since we only have a small Wiki for now, I guess it shouldn't be a problem to keep the essential instances of reverse links alive. (But if you ever find a way to provide a complete system again without the drawback of big loads on the server, please don't hesitate to put it in. After all, reverse links are a very powerful feature.) Olivier Antonis 21 Dec 2003

Ok - not-so-great. The version list shows all the versions of a page, but no matter which one you click on, only the most recent version displays.... [Rusty Smith]
Rusty, I've got it so that it will pull up the version now, but if you then click on the "versions" menu item again it won't go back.
18 Dec 2003
Great! Everything is working now; the Subscription notifications are lightning fast - I am deleting all of my "mailtos" [Rusty Smith]

Versions are broken again. They seem to be the canary in the coal mine lately. I had to change a couple of things because last night a pair of session variables I was using to track the "previous page" suddenly started causing an error for every page hit. Versions used those variables. The tech told me that Seed Wiki was generated an error a second. This morning after seeing your bug report I substituted a little Java Script to let versions figure out what the page is to do the versions for and now its back. Kenneth Tyler
Also, the subscriptions are working, but I still cannot get unsubscribed. when I go to the manage my subscriptions page, this is what I see:

None of the subscriptions show up to delete.
I was using the "Wiki Page Name?" from the wrong table in the query. Fixed now.
I really like that the notifications come html format so that it is easier to tell which page has changed, also including the page name in the subject line of the email is great. a button to jump right to that page? Fantastic! Are the subscriptions now set email notification everytime a page changes, like "mailto?" [Rusty Smith]
Yes, you should get a notification every time the page changes.  Kenneth Tyler
16 Dec 2003
Versions are broken again? [Rusty SmithYes, same error as a day or so ago. I'm having a problem with queries that get cached somewhere along the way. Fixed it again. Kenneth Tyler 16 Dec 2003 (moved the rest to theseedwikibook:improvingseedwiki) Oh, and how do you unsubscribe to a page or wiki that you have (oops) inadvertantly subscribed to? Rusty, I'll put in an "unsubscribe" link if you are already subscribed. Probably tomorrow morning. Ken

Hi Ken, Wiki Options and Basic Wiki Information can be changed and saved, but saving Wiki Defaults does not work now. Hartmut Pfüller
Thanks Hartmut, I reworked all those pages last week and that one seems to have forgotten its "form" tag. Fixed now. Kenneth Tyler Dec 16, 2003

14 Dec 2003
My wiki, Hvraptors Web?, has completely disappeared!!! Can it recovered? The home page had been erased somehow. I restored the latest version that had content by clicking on "versions", clicking on the version I wanted and then clicking on "edit" and then "saving" it. The version list has been broken over the weekend, so you would not have been able to do this. No content is ever lost from the wiki, it keeps all past versions in the database. It might be a good idea to download the contents occasionally as well ( you can do this by logging in in the footer and following the link to your account ).

14 December 2003
Hi
would it be possible that fix up a counter that displays
the number of visitor just when the page was loaded?
Robert
Robert, do you mean that the counter would appear, then disappear when the rest of the content appeared ?
Kenneth Tyler
Ex. "At this point is 50 visitor on the page" and is 50 number of visitor just when the page was loaded.
Robert

12 December 2003
"Versions List" seems to be broken in all wikis. Error Message is as follows:
.... [Rusty Smith] Rusty, yes. I add page level locking (available to the wiki owner only, goes along with the ability to delete pages as well) and forgot to carry it through to the versions query. Fixed now.  I was gone over the weekend, sorry for the timelag. Kenneth Tyler 14 Dec 2003

09 December 2003
I had to delete my cookies in Safari again to access my wiki...Thanks for answering my questions below so quickly, BTW.
-Reuben

08 December 2003
I can access the wiki with Firebird on Mac OS X fine. Before this weekend, Safari worked fine also. Here is what I get if I try using Safari now (Safari Wiki Error):

error logged:{ts '2003-12-08 11:10:03'} code template was wikiid was 3747 pagename was Trumbull College Council?&wikiid=2436&edit=yes&new=yes&wpid=0'>? server name was www.seedwiki.com query string was doc=TrumbullCollegeCouncil&wikiid=3747 Type:java.lang.Illegal State Exception? Message:Session is invalid <-- this means something went wrong and the server and it lost your session.
Kenneth Tyler

What gives? Originally I just thought that Seed Wiki was down for the weekend. Was I the only one experiencing problems? Weird - I just got a similar message while using Mozilla Firebird for OS X while editing this page - this was acutally a timeout message

I just investigated some more... deleting my seedwiki cookies in Safari fixed the problems. Hmm...

Also - will editing for Mozilla based browsers be fixed anytime soon? Clicking on the radio button doesn't change the editor. This is a problem on the Mac version where the Active Edit?, Java Applet?, and HTML editor show up 1 inch wide...
I could load the Beta version of HTML Area, which is supposed to handle Mozilla and let you try it. It probably works well enough to be a reasonable alternative. Problem is a lack of installation instructions. Let me get in touch with the HTML area folks and see if they can help me out. Kenneth Tyler

One more thing. Newlines in non-html wiki pages are axed when switching to one of the html editors. Can this be fixed? That is, can they be converted to < br > or < p > ?
At one time I converted pages back and forth when wiki's switched editors, but with more than 2 editor choices that becomes a thorny road, and I forsee even more editor choices on the horizon. You have to think that different people using the wiki can be using different editors, having the pages reformat themselves for each editor and trying to cache page content at the same time is way too interesting to contemplate. Kenneth Tyler

Thanks - Reuben

07 December 2003
can you put to "database" in wiki type?
Done, Kenneth Tyler Dec 7, 2003

06 December 2003

I've used other Wikis, no problem, but this one is giving me serious grief (though many thanks for creating it and offering the hosting). If I click on Text Area (and this is essential for some of the users I'm expecting to be interested in my Wiki, with only text mode browsers such as Lynx), I get a mass of HTML, instead of the friendly Wiki markup that everywhere else uses. I've seen suggestions that the radio buttons are switched, so I've tried HTMLEditor, but that's what I'm composing this in now, it's a WYSIWYG applet, fine if you've got a GUI browser as I have, but useless for people with accessibility problems and legacy hardware.

I really really hope you can improve things, a Wiki Farm is such a Great Idea!

JohnW

John, you can set a wiki on seedwiki to use a text area by default for editing. When you do so basic wiki codes are available: 1) camel case words 2) for bold 3) '' for italic 4) * for list item, you will see the list under the editor when the page is in edit mode. You can just ask that everyone use the wiki codes and not the WYSIWYG editor, even if their computer would support it. If you have problems with people nevertheless entering HTML, then I would consider setting up an option for you that would make a wiki allow only one kind of editor, in your case, the text area. I am interested in helping you set this up. So keep asking about things that are not clear or need to be improved for your expected users to use Seed Wiki effectively. Kenneth Tyler Dec 6, 2003

05 December 2003
Someone added a page in The Seed Wiki Book? outlining example wikis, but the links are not working correctly. They call up the activedit page when clicked. A cursory look shows that the links are ok (unless I am missing something?) so I think it is on the code end. I fixed the Wiki Fish link by simply changing the url to wikifish.org. but the others are a mess.
It was me. I forgot to lowercase the page names. Which means that links are not being properly removed from Active Edit? pages before they are parsed for wiki words. I fixed them. I just thought that people would like to be able to see some examples of what you can do with wikis. I'm working on a dmoz.org style directory for Seed Wiki, the directory page is long due for an overhaul, and I'll make it so that people who have accounts can do their own directories (using it as a widget) so people can create specialized directories of wikis if they have an interest. Ken Dec 5 2003

Also, the cookie to set the Activedit preference works like a charm, but I still think that the HTML editor and the Text Area radio buttons are switched?
The HTML area will turn into a text area if it thinks the browser won't support it. On my machine HTML Editor gives the editor and Text Area the text are. I don't know why they're switching for you.

[Rusty Smith] And why does that junk show up after my name?
Must be something in the first characters of your page (that's what's used as the title of the link) that's frying the parsing. I'll add that to the pile of parsing related stuff. Maybe this weekend. Did you like the Seed Wiki Christmas tree ?
Kenneth Dec 5 2003

02 December 2003
Ken: The new options for editing are slick! Our cross platform users are already pleased. A couple of observations: is there anyway for the edit page to remember the configuation that the user last implemented? for instance, If the last time I used the Java applet to edit the page, could a cookie (or some other scheme) be delivered to my computer so that it would start the editor using the java applet? Also: the Java Applet has the menu bar icons truncated so that only the buttons up to the "insert table" funtion is availabe, and this only barely so. Finally, are the "HTML Editor" and "a text area for editing" choices switched? "A text area for editing" brings up an HTML-only editor, but it has all of the standard wiki formatting rules called out at the bottom (The text editor that comes up when you select "HTML Editor does not list these conventions and they do not work in either editor). Let me know if this makes any sense at all.... [Rusty Smith]
Rusty, I have switched the label/radio buttons to select editors and added small arrows to try and make it clearer which radio button selects which editor. I have also added a cookie that remembers your choice. So if you allow cookies the edit page should open to the last editor selected.
Kenneth Tyler
Yes, absolutely. Let me know what you need from us. [Rusty Smith] Just send me the file you're using for the header.

I have found that using the scroll wheel on my mouse to scroll down a page often seems to inadvertenty activate the hyperlinks - and so have lost lots of editing this way.
I don't think that there is anything I can do about this sensitivity. Does this happen in other web pages or only in Seed Wiki ? The links in Seed Wiki are just ordinary HTML anchors, no different from any other web page. Kenneth Tyler

While I'm here - the page change email that is sent to me is in html format which is impossible to read on my email prog. Is there a simple way out of this short of copying to a html editor?
Kevin Flude
I am going to rework the email notifications now that I have set up user accounts. I will include a preference to get plain text email notifications.
Kenneth Tyler

12-01-03 2:00 p.m. Still having difficulties getting all of my Willamette Wiki?/CS130 Glossary words to show up. If you will get the web page up completely again, I will copy half of it over to a new web page (assuming that it is a "Data Too Large" error?)
-mjc
I have been seeing the same thing in the bug report. I don't understand it. I found a complete version of glossary from earlier today and restored it. Maybe some kind of database connection problem. Might be certain browsers truncating the text when they send it back.

Yes, I am working with support to get the spell checker working. Kenneth Tyler
Thank you for the answer

What is the Widget "wikivisitorcounter" referring to? I had 73 yesterday and have only 61 today. Should a visitor counter go retrograde? -FB Because of space constraints Seedwiki only tracks visitors for 7 days at a time. As the 7 day window moves the number of visitors might decline. I am working on being able to keep statistics for longer periods of time.
Kenneth Tyler
REPLY: Space constraints? If you manage to keep a data variable for the counting value somewhere, there should be no space constraints.

For some reason, the wiki is processing my images path as a Wiki Word, causing the URL to the image to get clobbered, and present the dreaded red x of doom.
They should be removed before wiki word processing, what wiki, what page is this on. As a temporary fix you can remove all capitals from the image urls. Kenneth Tyler
